ABOUT MEL MARA

Mel Mara is a tall and strong stallion with the kindest of temperaments. His racing career was defined by soundness with 104 starts in a seven season career. His extreme speed was evident right from his juvenile days. In just his third career start as a two-year-old, he flashed a .25 final quarter to record his maiden victory. A further 25 victories were to come his way, defeating some of the superstars of North American Harness racing including Always B Miki ($2.7M), McWicked ($5.1M), Sweet Lou ($3.4M and Foiled Again ($7.3M).

Final quarter speed was a powerful weapon in his repertoire -  on six occasions he exploded home sub-.26 quarters. His best winning times on all size tracks were 1:47 (mile), 1:47.4 (1000m) and 1:50.2 (half-mile). So where does this explosive speed come from? A close look at his pedigree reveals some obvious answers.

His sire Lis Mara (1:47.6) often displayed explosive speed to come from impossible positions to record amazing victories on his way to $2.14 million in earnings. Cambest (TT1.46.2), the sire of Lis Mara was the fastest horse in history when he retired in 1993.  His first half that day was covered in an astonishing 51.6 seconds on his way to his world record. Matts Scooter (TT1:48.2), the sire of the dam of Mel Mara, was the fastest horse ever when he retired in 1989.

Nihilator (1:49.6), the sire of the granddam of Mel Mara was the fastest horse ever in a race when winning in 1985. Then the third dam of Mel Mara, Peachbottom, is a full sister to one of the fastest horses of the 20th century in No Nukes. Racing manners weren’t often high on the priority list for him but speed certainly was. Mel Mara is also from the same family that has given us the very successful sire in Rock N Roll Heaven – the third dam of Mel Mara and the fourth dam of Rock N Roll Heaven are full sisters.

Mel Mara has a pedigree saturated in high speed. Being by a Cam Fella line stallion from a Matts Scooter mare, Mel Mara is perfectly suited in Australia to breed over mares sired by Artsplace, Western Hanover and Direct Scooter line stallions.
